"BAAGH | Garden" Sacred Spaces of Contemplation

A special exhibition featuring hand-embroidered installations expressed through varied stitch traditions, capturing cultural diversity, ancient knowledge and exchange. These artworks communicate the rich culture and history of the region within a contemporary context.

A collaboration of Women artisans of Punjab, Indus Heritage Trust, Handwork Studio and UNESCO.

The objective of the project was to present hand embroideries as an art form, using local materials and embroidery techniques. The design team of Indus Heritage with collaborating consultants and artisans of Punjab, worked to create artistic installations.

The embroideries presented in this exhibition were the result of a uniquely collaborative and creative process between 200 women artisans, UNESCO and Indus Heritage Trust. Working with traditional cultural designs and indigenous embroidery stitches, artisans and designers shared their expertise to create a series of large-scale installations inspired by the rich cultural history of Punjab. Moving away from strict representation, the installations celebrate collaborative reinterpretation, allowing the artisans new ways of seeing their own work and of it being seen by others.
